It is the "Model A", which is the same model that Paul Desmond used throughout most of his career, including on the iconic "Take 5" recording with the Dave Brubeck quartet. This one is in nearly the same exact configuration as Desmond's as well. It is stamped 3A on one side, and 18 on the other. Desmond used a 4A 18, which had a slightly larger tip opening. This piece is also stamped "Rico Products LTD Distributors", and the serial number is 9406 on the bottom of the shank. This one is interesting in that, unlike most Model A Gregorys, it does not have a brass ring on the shank. Instead, it has 4 circles. However, it is made of hard rubber, not resin.
I confirmed this by taking a tiny sample off of the shank with very fine emery paper. It created brown residue, which is indicative of hard rubber. The resin pieces leave a blue/grey residue. I'm not sure what the explanation is for this one not having the gold band, but in all other respects it is identical to every other Model A I've had. This mouthpiece is in very good condition. The tip, table, and rails are perfectly smooth, and original. There is some minor tooth wear on the beak, but nothing that warrants filling or repair. Of course it has light scratches and scuffs, but nothing that wouldn't be expected of a half century old mouthpiece. 060, so it is pretty close. It works great with a #3.5 or so reed. If you are going for the'dry martini' tone, this is THE mouthpiece to have! GREGORY MODEL A 3A 18 ALTO SAXOPHONE MOUTHPIECE HARD RUBBER" is in sale since Sunday, January 19, 2020.
