For some reason, he had also sand blasted off the plating on these pieces. I decided to take a gamble, and sent out a handful of the most valuable pieces to Erik to see what he could do with them. I couldn't have been more pleased with the results! They all came back as great players!
I then brought them to a local silversmith for replating. I chose to get them done in silver plate (rather than gold) on Erik's recommendation. Again, the results were great. The only thing I want to mention is that, due to the previous sand blasting, they have a bit more of a "matte" or "satin" appearance, rather than the typical highly polished look. Below are the specifics of the mouthpiece for this listing. This listing is for a vintage Otto Link Tone Master mouthpiece for alto saxophone.
This is not the current re-make, but rather an original 1940's era Tone Master made in New York. It has the serial number B8 on the side. This piece was originally a 5 (stamped on the table). Erik opened it up to. 080, which is the equivalent of a modern Link 6, which is a great spot for a lot of players.
Basically, I had told Erik to do whatever he thought was best (as far as tip openings) based on what he had to work with, and that is what he opened it to. He etched the new tip opening, and initialed it on the shank, although it might be difficult to see in the pics because the etching is rather light. The work he did on this piece is exquisite! The tip and side rails are nice and thin and perfectly balanced. This piece is a fantastic player! I wouldn't say that it is'dark' per se, but it has enough dark tendencies to temper the natural brightness of the high register of the alto sax. All in all, it is just a really rich, robust sounding piece.
It responds well in all registers. The piece is in excellent condition, with a perfectly smooth tip, table, and side rails. The original bite plate is in perfect condition. This is a great mouthpiece for the serious jazz player.Obviously, it has lost much of its collector's value due to the refacing and replating, but it is a fantastic playing piece!
