It is an'early New York, USA' era Meyer. These have the same scooped inner side walls as the'Meyer Bros.Era pieces, but with a thinner body which makes them a bit brighter. This is the quintessential bebop mouthpiece for alto saxophonists, as played by Phil Woods and countless others. This one originally had a very small tip opening (stamped 3), but it has been opened up by Phil Engleman (better known by his working name'Phil-Tone') to. That is about equal to a modern Meyer #5.
This seems to be right about where most players like them. The quality of the work is excellent, as is the condition of the piece. The tip, table, and rails are in perfect shape and there are no bite marks on the beak.
There is just a minor bit of ligature scuffing on the top of the piece. It is still shiny and black. Phil did sign the piece on the side and etched the new tip opening there.
This is a great piece for the serious jazz alto player. Vintage Meyer alto mouthpieces are very prized for the excellent quality of their hard rubber compound, but they are getting more and more difficult to come by. This one will only go up in value as you enjoy playing it!
