It is an older "Made in USA" era piece from the 1970's. These are sometimes referred to as'early Babbitt' era Meyer's.
It is a 6M with a medium chamber. It is in excellent condition.
The tip, table, and side rails are perfectly smooth. Here are no bite marks on the beak. The rubber is slightly faded, but that is about it. Speaking of the rubber, this one seems to have a higher rubber content or something.
It is one of those where you can literally smell the rubber under your nose (not in a bad way)! This piece was given to Frank Catalano by one of his early teachers and he played it regularly during his formative years. This one is a GREAT player. Frank told me this, and I can confirm it. This outplays just about any Meyer I've ever played, including lots of New York era pieces.
In fact, it plays very much like an early New York era Meyer Bros. To me it has more richness to the tone and is slightly darker than a typical made in USA era piece, or even a NY, USA era piece. It seems like the inner side walls are a bit more scooped than on a normal made in USA era piece. That, plus the rubber smell actually makes me wonder if this might not have been a custom order. No way to know really, but I can assure you it is a fantastic player! The item "MEYER 6M ALTO SAXOPHONE MOUTHPIECE -VINTAGE 1970'S MADE IN USA EARLY BABBITT ERA" is in sale since Friday, May 18, 2018.
