The black plastic band on the shank is original (these are often missing). This mouthpiece originally had a very small tip opening (it is marked 3 on the side), however it has been expertly refaced by Brian Powell. Brian is one half of the duo known as "The Mouthpieces Guys". They are the best, and most in demand, in the business of refacing mouthpieces. Their work is second to none, and this mouthpiece is no exception. It has been opened to. For reference, that is just a hair smaller than a modern Meyer #6. This is a great spot for many contemporary players. Along with opening the tip, and balancing the rails, it looks like the table was flattened a bit. The horizontal mill marks are still visible on most of the table, but not at the very butt end, so it must have been a bit high there.
Brian etched his initials and the tip opening on the side, as is customary for him to do. This mouthpiece is in excellent condition.
I literally just got it back from Brian, so it has only been play tested by me for an hour or so since it was refaced. The tip/table/rails are perfectly smooth. There are no tooth indentations in the bite plate. There are some superficial scratches/cracks visible on the interior, but they pose little risk of causing a problem. What I mean by superficial is that they only affect the (inner) surface of the mouthpiece, they do not penetrate all the way through the thickness of the material. Virtually all plastic mouthpieces have these, but they are much more noticeable on white mouthpieces simply because they collect grime from the neck cork, which makes them show up.
Other than that, it is nice and clean. This is a great piece for players and collectors alike. It has a bright, focused sound.Earl Bostic used one of these (a black version I think), and the tone of this one is definitely reminiscent of his sound. This is due to lack of available transportation ie. If this potential wait presents a problem for you, please refrain from purchasing at this time. I sincerely apologize for this, unfortunately unavoidable, inconvenience.
